Southcoast Health’s Patient Financial Services can assist you in determining your eligibility for health insurance programs and provide help with enrollment. Even if you work or have private health insurance, you may qualify for:

  • Free health care
  • Low-cost health care
  • Help paying for your health insurance premiums
  • Tax credits to help offset the cost of your health insurance

About Mass Health

What is MassHealth?

MassHealth is a state and federal program providing health care benefits to Massachusetts residents with low and moderate incomes. It offers a broad range of health care services by:

  • Paying for part or all of a member’s health insurance.
  • Paying medical providers for services to MassHealth members.

MassHealth covers doctor visits, prescription drugs, hospital stays and many other important services.

Who Can Get MassHealth?

MassHealth benefits are available to individuals who meet eligibility requirements determined by:

  • Family size and income
  • Assets, if you are 65 or older or need long-term care services

You may qualify even if you already have other health insurance. If your income is too high for MassHealth, you might be eligible for assistance through a Health Connector Plan.

Applying for MassHealth

To apply for MassHealth, the Children’s Medical Security Plan, a Health Connector Plan, or the Health Safety Net, complete one of the following forms:

  • Application for Health Coverage and Help Paying Costs
  • Senior Medical Benefits Request

What Does the Health Connector Offer?

The Massachusetts Health Connector provides access to health and dental insurance plans for individuals, families and small businesses. Services include:

  • Shopping for and enrolling in plans from leading insurers
  • Full health benefits, including doctor visits, hospital care and prescriptions

You may qualify for a low-cost insurance plan (ConnectorCare) and additional savings through premium tax credits.

Who is Eligible?

To qualify for plans through the Health Connector, you must:

  • Be a Massachusetts resident
  • Be a U.S. citizen, national or lawfully present immigrant
  • Not be in prison

To qualify for premium tax credits, your income must:

  • Be less than 400% of the Federal Poverty Level
  • Not qualify for Medicare, MassHealth or affordable employer-sponsored insurance

Children’s Medical Security Plan

A program providing preventive health care coverage for uninsured children aged 18 or younger, regardless of income. Monthly premiums may apply.

Health Safety Net

Covers certain hospital and community health center services for low-income patients. Does not cover physician office visits.
