A concussion is a type of mild traumatic brain injury (usually caused by a blow to the head) that changes the way your brain functions. It does not damage the actual structure of the brain, which is why a concussion cannot be seen on an MRI or CAT scan.

While most concussions are not life-threatening, they are still a very serious injury that needs to be treated appropriately. Symptoms usually resolve quickly with just rest, but in some instances they can be long-term or even fatal.
If you think you or your child has suffered a concussion, they should be removed from activity immediately and not returned until you have consulted a health care professional. They should rest quietly and avoid things like loud music, texting, video games and computer usage.
